Eco Mixed Media Tag

Hi everyone, Mou Saha here with an eco mixed media tag made from upcycled chipboard and cardboard! In this tutorial, you'll see how easy it is to transform discarded things with just a few mediums and supplies. So, let me list the supplies I used and break my process down into steps.

Other - Chipboard, cardboard, thread, hole punch, cardstock, scissors, background stamp

Cut open a cereal box with scissors. Cut it into an 8" long x 4" wide rectangle. Snip the top corners at about 45 degree angles. Punch a hole near the top center to make the tag.

Lay the Mandala stencil on the tag as shown and apply a coat of Whipped Spackle with palette knife. Let dry.

Cut a piece of a cardboard box. Peel off the top layer to expose the corrugated surface. Tear a small piece. Attach it to the tag with Gel Medium using the silicone spatula.

Apply a coat of gesso over the dry layers.

Color the tag with Gelatos colors. Blend them with water using paint brush from the Iridescents set.

Did you know that you can stamp with Gelatos colors? 'Ink up' a background stamp with Gelatos color Iced Coffee. Spritz a little water on the stamp. Stamp randomly around the tag.

Drip some Gelatos color down the tag to add another layer of interest.

Trace the above stencil from the 201 collection on cardstock with PITT pen. Color it with Gelatos colors and cut around it to create a focal point piece.

Cut some thread with scissors and mush it up in your hands. attach it to the tag with gel medium. Attach the focal point piece overlapping the thread.

Cut a small strip of cardstock and snip one end to look like a banner. Write 'Be Cool' on it with PITT pen. Attach to the tag to finish.

Mixed Media Art Journaling

Hi everyone, Mou Saha here with a mixed media art journal page! Art journaling is such a free-ing and relaxing practice. I just add layers of colors and mediums and stop when I feel the page is done. If you have never tried art journaling, may be you should try. There are no rules really and no right or wrong way of doing it.

Now, let me walk you through the steps.

Cut a piece of Ice Layers - Bubbles with scissors and attach to the page. The Ice Layers are self-adhesive clear texture layers that can be used as a whole or cut up as I did. If you are planning to cut it apart, be sure to keep the protective layers on so the pieces don't stick to your cutting tools. You can even use it as stencil.

Attach pieces of found papers and trims to the page using gel medium and silicone spatula or a brush. Seal the pieces in place with a top coat of gel medium. Let dry.

Place a Mandala Mixed Media Paper stencil and apply Whipped Spackle with a palette knife. Let the Spackle dry completely.

Apply a coat of gesso to unify the pieces and to prepare the page for adding colors.

Rub Gelatos colors as shown.

Blend the colors with a paint brush dipped in water.

Rub some Gelatos colors on a palette or craft mat and dilute the pigment with water. Splatter some on the page and let some colors drip down.

Once the colors are thoroughly dry, cut out pieces from the Mixed Media Transfers Flowers and apply to the page with the craft stick included in the kit.

Create a focal point with one of the phrases from the Words Mixed Media Transfers to finish.

Other - watercolor paper, palette knife, silicone spatula, paper trimmer, watercup with water

Trim watercolor paper to your favorite size. I trimmed mine to 9 x 6".

Apply a coat of gesso to prime the paper.

Once the gesso is completely dry, color the page with Gelatos colors Translucents.

Blend the Gelatos colors with water and the paint brush that came with the Gelatos.

Lay the Mandala stencil at about the center of the page and apply Whipped Spackle with a palette knife.

Add some more Gelatos colors over the stenciled design and blend with water.

When the page is dry, rub on the Mixed Media Transfer Word - Smile Daily - in the center.

Make some marks with a watercolor pencil to finish.

You can display the finished piece in a frame or clip it on to a photo wire or even give as a gift. 

Bible Journaling

Hi everyone, Mou here with a Bible Journaling tutorial using the Faber-Castell Design Memory Craft Bible Journaling Kit.

Silicone Spatula (from Honey Medium Starter kit - you can use a brush instead)

Scissors

Watercolor paper (I used 140 lb cold press by Canson, cut to 9x9 inches)

The Bible I have does not have a wide margin, so I make color copies of the verses, trim around with scissors and attach to a wider piece of watercolor paper with Gel Medium. You may not need to do this step if your Bible is designed for journaling.

Apply Gesso around the verse and even layer on parts of the verse that you don't plan to focus on. Let dry.

Add some color to the page using the highlighter Gelatos from the kit. Blend with water.

Lay the stencil Trust His Path on the page and apply Whipped Spackle with a palette knife.

Doodle a frame around your chosen verse with a PITT pen.

Cut out a phrase from the kit with scissors to attach to the page. Add a diecut or sticker to decorate.

Rub some more Gelatos colors on and blend it with a coat of glaze over the whole page. Let dry completely.

Doodle some feathers around the verse with PITT pen.

Handletter the verse near the framed verse and doodle a frame around it with the Metallic Gold PITT pen. Make marks and add more touches of gold all around the page to finish.

Canvas Decor with Wedding Stencil

Now, let's walk through the steps.

Rub Gelatos color Aqua Dolce generously on the canvas. You could choose different color to suit your color scheme.

Blend the color with Gesso to completely coat the canvas. Let dry.

Lay the It Takes Two stencil at about the center of the canvas and apply Whipped Spackle through the stencil. Let dry.

Lay a half wreath stencil design below the main image and apply Whipped Spackle with palette knife. When dry, place the other half wreath stencil above the birds and apply Whipped Spackle. Let dry.

Rub a little of the Translucent Gelatos colors Persimmon and Peppercorn along the edges of the canvas and blend with your fingers or use the blending foam from the Translucents Gelatos set to finish.

See, wasn't that easy?

8" x 8" stretched canvas

Plastic wrap

Apply a coat of gesso to the canvas. Let dry.

Add a base coat of colors using the Gelatos colors - Translucents - Lychee, Creme De Menthe, Thistle and Persimmon and blend them with a sponge. You can replace these colors with Gelatos colors of your choice or those that match your event/occasion color scheme.

Apply a thin top coat of Texture Luxe™ Silver with palette knife.

Immediately cover the wet canvas with a piece of plastic wrap. Smoosh the plastic over the wet Texture Luxe™ Silver around gently with your fingers to create texture. Leave the wrap on till the Texture Luxe™ Silver dries. Do not try to speed up the drying process with a heat tool as the heat might melt the plastic onto the canvas.

Carefully peel away the plastic wrap to reveal the textured surface.

Lay the Always & Forever stencil at about the center of the canvas and apply Whipped Spackle with palette knife. Avoid applying Whipped Spackle on the 'o' or wedding ring part of the Forever. Let the medium dry thoroughly.

Apply Texture Luxe™ Gold on the wedding rings part of the Always & Forever stencil with palette knife. Let dry completely.

Apply Glass Bead Glitter Gel to create the gem part of the wedding rings using the Always & Forever stencil and palette knife. Let dry.

Color Layering and the Intro to Watercolor with Gelatos Kit

The Intro to Watercolor with Gelatos kit includes a rainbow of colors, a water brush, and a silicone craft tray for mixing colors.  Naturally, you can use watercolor paper, but you can use other surfaces as well. Carolyn Dube here sharing how to watercolor in an altered journal.

The first thing I do is add a layer of gesso.  This will help strengthen the page since this is an old beat up book that is about to have water added to it.

Once it is completely dry, I stamp an image on the page.   Perfect stamping is not needed here, because the color of the Gelatos will define the lines and areas.

Rub the Gelatos onto the silcone craft tray.  Using the water brush, pick a color and start coloring in the stamped image.  You can custom mix colors by dipping the brush in one than another.  Here I dipped in the Bubble Gum and Banana to create my own deep orange.

 

You can also rub the Gelatos right next to each other, then add water from the brush and mix the colors that way.  Which is the best way? Whichever one feels most comfortable to you! To build up the blooms, add one color on the edges of another color.  This creates subtle color blending.

The leftover bits of color in the tray became a very subtle color wash by adding lots of water to them and then brushing the diluted color to the page.

 To create the lettering, I drew the letters with an XS black Pitt Pen. Then I filled in all of the letters with the Cotton Candy Gelatos.  Next, I added Lime to only the top of the letters.  The final touch was a swipe of Bubble Gum on on the bottom of each letter.  The colors will blend and mix creating new colors along the way.  

 Now it's your turn to play. Grab your Gelatos and have some watercolor fun!

 

Iridescent Word Tags

It's that time of year when many of us select a word to focus on for the year, rather than make traditional resolutions. This is something that I've done for the last several years. In 2018 my word will be "Intentional".

For me that means making more deliberate choices about what I spend my money on, the food that I eat, how I spend my time and who I give my energy to. I've found that having visual reminders helps keep my word at the forefront of my mind.

Today I've made some altered shipping tags with my own word, as well as one for a friend.

I started by giving 2 shipping tags a generous coat of Gesso.

I began building color by using one of my favorite techniques which is to scribble onto a craft sheet, with my Gelatos, and spritzing with water. First I used Stardust, which is part of the Iridescents set.

Next, I did the same thing with Supernova and Nebula Gelatos, also from the Iridescents set. I just love where the colors run together and blend. That's where the magic starts to happen, for me!

I brushed on some Gesso to help soften and unite the colors. Building layers is part of the fun, so don't worry about losing some of the vibrancy.

To create texture, I added stamping using miscellaneous stamps that I had on hand.

Using the same color Gelatos, I began adding color back in.

To add even more texture, I used a stencil from the 301 Stencil Collection, and wiped off some of the color with a wet baby wipe.

After letting my tags dry for a couple minutes, I used Essential PITT Artist Pens, and a Stampers Big White Pen to make some marks.

Next, I tore thin strips of leftover muslin that I had on hand and used the same Gelatos to give them some color. I also added a few drops of ink and a bit of stamping.

On another couple of pieces of muslin I stamped out my two words and ran a wonky stitch around them to attach them to the tags.

I don't let my lack of sewing skills stop me. Instead, I embrace the wonky stitch and have at it.

To finish off my tags, I used the torn strips of muslin like ribbon, and looped them through the holes. I also added a bit of contrasting color to the edges, using Black Hole, also from the Iridescents set, to create some depth.

Winter Canvas

Hey friends! Today I'm in the studio making some winter inspired canvas artwork.

I started by giving my 2 canvas a generous coat of Gesso and allowing it to dry.

I gave both my canvas a base layer of color, using Fig, Silver Ice, and a Deluxe Water Brush.

Using a wet baby wipe, I removed some of the color from each canvas. This helps create some great texture.

On one of my canvas I use the Warm Wishes stencil and Texture Luxe in copper. I set that aside to dry and started on my other canvas.

For this one I used a mittens stencil and a Gelatos in Satellite, which comes in the Iridescents set.

Using Gelatos in Blueberry to add some definition to my mittens design and ran a water brush around it to soften the line.

Next, I added a bit of stamping and used a Stampers Big White Pen to make some marks.

For an extra bit of sparkle, I added glitter to Whipped Spackle and spread that on with Palette Knife. I set this canvas aside to dry.

Switching back to the first canvas, I used more of the Satellite Gelatos to add the sentiment,

For some added texture, I added a few dots, using Texture Gems and some stamping to grunge it up a bit.

Colorful Cardboard Christmas Tree

Carolyn Dube here sharing a whimsical Christmas decoration made by recycling one of the cardboard boxes that has shown up at my door.  It starts by cutting out 5 triangles for the tree and 5 rectangles for the trunk.  Why did I use cardboard? I love the ridges and texture in cardboard plus it is an easy to find supply. 

 

I covered the front and sides with Gesso. New to Gesso? It is a primer that I am putting on the cardboard.  It will allow me to blend the Gelatos in the next step more easily. 

Using Gelatos, I added a color to part of the tree.  For the green, I did something a little different by mixing 2 colors together so I could get just the shade that I was envisioning. You can create custom colors by blending different colors together.

 

Next, I blended it with my finger.  Another option is to use water and a paintbrush to move the color around also but I love the feel of smearing the color so I opted for using my hands. On the smaller triangles I filled it in completely with color but on the larger triangles, I left the center plain because it was just going to be covered up when the tree was glued together.

To glue it together, I used Gel Medium.  Then  I added a top coat of Gel Medium to seal the Gelatos so that I could add the next layer to it.  The tree trunk was attached using masking tape on the back. 

The back isn't glamorous at all, since the writing from the box is there too. Nobody will see the back because this will be hanging on a door in my art studio.  How will I hang it?  A Command Adhesive mount since this is so light.  After all it is just cardboard.

 

Once the Gel Medium was completely dry, and it was very important that it is completely dry, I used the brush tip Pitt Pens to add a bit of pattern.  On the pink, I did scribble journaling where I captured my gratitude for the blessings in my life.  For each color, I chose a different pattern  to add with the pens. On the yellow the drawing is tough to see in photo, but it is there!
