Autumn Leaves

This week's Gelatos® color of the week is Red Cherry.  I chose a project with an Autumn theme which works perfectly with this bright, fun color.

I started by decoupaging a canvas panel with a music sheet and Gel Medium. Next, I applied Red Cherry and Blood Orange Gelatos to it and used Gel Medium to move it around my background. I ended up layering up a few layers this way so that the colors would become intense.

 

Next I added a layer of Glaze. I love how glossy the glaze makes the paper! I used a rubber stamp to make an impression in it while it was still wet.  It's a really neat technique.  I ended up covering it but I at least wanted to show you another fun way to use the Glaze.

 

For the leaves, I used my die-cut machine to cut a leaf shape out of black cardstock .  You can also draw the leaf and cut it out of cardstock if you don't have a die-cut machine. Next, I  mixed together some Whipped Spackle and Gold Texture Luxe™. Mixing these creates a different color and texture while retaining it's metallic shine.  After they were mixed, I added some Gold Champagne Gelatos to half of it. The gold  really bumped up the metallic look and darkened it as well. I used a pencil to etch some vein lines before the mixture dried.

I did the same technique using Whipped Spackle, Copper Texture Luxe, and Iced Chai Gelatos to it for the other leaf.

 

The bookplate I used was originally silver, and I wanted it to be copper, so I used a dab of the copper Texture Luxe and added a couple of drops of water to it and then applied it.  After it dried, I rubbed ink from the Walnut Brown #177 Stamper's Big Brush Pen into the recessed areas.

Next I used a small piece of black cardstock and covered the front side of it with 3 layers of Chalk Board Paint . Once it was  dry, I wrote the word Autumn on  it with the Stamper's Big Brush pen in white. I applied some Walnut Brown ink around the edge of the canvas as well to create a frame.

 

After everything was dry,  I wrapped some string and beads around the right edge to finish it off.

This project made me really look forward to the upcoming fall season.

Bloom Mini Mixed Media Art Journal with Clear Scraps

Hi everyone, it's Erin Bassett here. This week the Design Team was challenged to use a combination of Design Memory Craft™  and Clear Scraps products.  Clear Scraps manufactures some beautiful artistic pieces for mixed media.  Check out their website for more information. I was really excited to use these products. This is what I came up with...a mini art journal. By allowing myself the creative freedom to combine elements into one project, I bloomed as an artist.

Here's how I created the pages.

For the first page I covered the chipboard piece with Gesso and then layered  Stamper's Big Brush Pens in Dark Chrome Yellow #109 and Cadmium Yellow #107. To create the flower embellishment,  I took the chipboard piece and applied the Silver Texture Luxe over  a stencil from the 101 collection to create a pattern. Once that was dry,  I placed the stencil back on the chipboard and traced the pattern with a PITT^® Artist Pen Cobalt Green #156 and then mounted it on top of a foil cupcake liner that I was smashed flat. 

The  button on top was colored with the PITT^® Artist Pen Cobalt Green #156.

For the backside of that page I mounted layered cupcake liners and topped it with a clear button that I colored as well. 

To add texture to this clear acrylic page, I used Silver Texture Luxe and a stencil from the 101 collection . I created the same design on both sides of the page being careful to line up the pattern . Once it was dry,  I marked and smudged the edges of the pattern with a PITT^® Artist Pen.

For this chipboard page I used the 3 x 12 Bloom where you are Planted stencil from Clear Scraps and traced over it with the Stamper's Big Brush White Pen and then shadowed it with the PITT^® Artist Pen. I also used Copper and Pearl Texture Luxe with the stencil to create the flower. Once everything was dry,  I rubbed a Banana Gelatos^® around the background.

For the backside of the page, I added Gesso and then used both the small and the large dot dabber with the Snow Cone Gelatos^® to create circles all over the page. I outlined the larger ones using a Black #199 PITT^® Artist Pen. I again used the 3 x 12 Bloom where you are Planted stencil and Banana Gelatos^® to create and color the flowers. The Black  Stamper's Big Brush Pen was used along with letter stamps to add the quote to this and the following pages.

 I mounted a square of sticky backed canvas onto this clear page. I added Gesso to the canvas and then used a stencil from the Scandinavian collection and the Stamper's Big Brush pens in Dark Chrome Yellow #109 and Cadmium Yellow #107. I also scribbled a bit of color onto my craft mat and added a drop of water to it so I could brush it on around the design. Next I used the Texture Gems^™ Ice Liner to trace around parts of the design. Lastly,  I sprinkled some glitter to add some sparkle. 

The backside of the page also has canvas that was prepped with Gesso.  I used a wash of the Banana Gelatos^® to color the background. While that dried I mixed together the Blueberry Gelatos^® and Whipped Spackle Paste. Next, I applied it over a stencil from the Scandinavian collection. Once dried,  I added some doodles with a PITT^® Artist Pen. The leaves and flag were rubbed with the Lime and Bubble Gum Gelatos^® onto white cardstock.  Next I cut them out into the shapes I needed. I also made a wash with the Cobalt Green#156 Stamper's Big Brush pen and water and dipped some cotton lace into it to dye it blue.

For the last page I added some Gesso and then used a Texture Card to add a pattern. Once it was dry,  I made a color wash with Cobalt Green#156 Stamper's Big Brush pen and water and applied it to the background. On a piece of white cardstock  I brushed a wash of Stamper's Big Brush Pens in Dark Chrome Yellow #109 and Cadmium Yellow #107. I used a stamp from the Gelatos Dolce 2 gift set to add another design element.  Once again,  I created the leaves by rubbing the Lime Gelatos^® onto the paper and then cut it into the shape I needed. The veins were added with a May Green #170 Stamper's Big Brush Pen. Lastly, I  added a dot of the Pearl Texture Gems Liner to each of the flowers.

I hope this inspires you to use a variety of mixed media products on your Clear Scraps art journal pages. 

Tea time mini canvas tutorial by Mou

Hi friends, Mou here today with a mini canvas tutorial using Faber-Castell Design Memory Craft Textural Accents and tools, Texture Luxe™ and Gelatos®! So, let's get started.

Lay the tea cups stencil from the Scandinavian Stencil Collection on a piece of cardboard. Apply Faber-Castell Design Memory Craft Textural Accent Whipped Spackle with a palette knife from the Gelatos Tool Set.

Once the Whipped Spackle is dry, cut out the cup, handle and plate with scissors.

Color a 4"x 4" canvas with Gelatos® colors: Fig and Guava. Blend the colors with gesso.

Here's the painted canvas.

Attach the tea cup pieces to the canvas with Gel Medium.

Color inside the tea cup with Texture Luxe™ Gold.

Use Gelatos® color Guava to color the tea cup.

Cut a small tag out of cardstock and color it with Gelatos® color Guava and Texture Luxe™ Gold. When dry, write 'Tea time' with the B-tip Essential PITT Artist pen, BLACK. Thread a needle and poke a hole through the top of the tag.

Attach the tag to the canvas as shown. Add some more color to the canvas with Gelatos® colors: Metallic Grape and Watermelon.

Ink up a stamp with #133 Magenta and # 219 Deep Scarlet Stamper's Big Brush pens and randomly stamp on the canvas.

When all the inks and mediums are dry, seal the piece with a thin coat of gel medium to finish.

Put a Bird on it Canvas

Hello everyone, this is Rachel Kleinman from rwkrafts.com here for my first post as a member of the Faber-Castell Design Memory Craft CORE Design Team! I am so excited to be working for this amazing company. I have been using these wonderful mixed media products for years and truly love them! With that, I'm here to share my newest canvas - Put a Bird on it!

 

I've put together a full process video that shows you how the canvas came together, as well sharing some fun techniques that mix Design Memory Craft Glaze medium with Gelatos®. Don't worry, if you're not a video person I've got some step by step photos as well!...

 

 

I started with a gesso'd 6x6" canvas that I colored with Gelatos® colors Limoncello and Margarita Mix then blended with water. I was playing with some techniques that use the Glaze medium and this first technique is my favorite: I blended Gelatos® Passion Fruit with Glaze using my spatula. This creates a very thick somewhat translucent colored glaze that looks beautiful when dried on the canvas. (I recommend watching this in the video... it's just yummy!)

Next I did a similar technique with Glaze and Gelatos® Orange Soda but I didn't mix the Gelatos® fully into the Glaze. This leaves more of the clear gloss behind with added hints of the Gelatos® pigment. I did this to spread my paste over a triangle stencil from the Stencils 101 collection.

I love mixing and matching even my wet mediums together to see what happens! Here I mixed Texture Luxe™ Gold with Glass Bead Glitter Gel and added 'smudges' of it on my canvas with my spatula. The Glass Bead Glitter Gel adds a little extra sparkle and texture to the already brilliant Texture Luxe™.

For the focal image of my canvas, I traced this bird from the Scandinavian Stencil Collection with my black PITT Artist Pen. Then I colored it with Art Grip® Aquarelle watercolor pencils. Once dried, I cut out each piece and adhered it to the canvas with Gel Medium.

 I used a couple extra elements to add finishing details to the canvas, such as Gold Texture Gems™, Glass Bead Glitter Gel, and Pearl Texture Luxe™ paste.

Hi!  I'm Laura Bray and I am  so excited to be one of the new Core Design Team members.  I can't wait to show you how you can use the Design· Memory· Craft® product line to create beautiful accessories, home decor and art projects.  I'm a professional craft designer and my goal is create tutorials that are functional and simple to make.  I live in Southern California with my husband and our eleven year old daughter.

Summer is here!  Time for vacation!  While packing for a beach vacation, one of the hardest things to decide is which purse or bag to pack.  I always feel guilty using valuable luggage space for empty purses and bags.  This project offers a perfect solution!  It's a large  9" x 10" pouch that is big enough to hold sunscreen and other beach essentials, or you can fold it over into a clutch.  Add a layered flower felt pin and your bag is now converted into an evening clutch - perfect for a late night dinner.

Guten Tag (Hello) from Jamie Dougherty

Hello everyone! Jamie Dougherty here and I am beyond excited to be joining the Faber-Castell Design Memory Craft team. I am honored to be a Featured Designer and wanted to kick off this new adventure with a little home decor piece to say Guten Tag or Hello ;) 

This little home decor piece was created on a 5x7" wood panel. Those of you who know me, know how much I love working with wood so I wanted to share how beautifully my favorite surface works with one of my favorite Design Memory Craft® mediums. The rich and colorful Gelatos®

 

 

As you can see in the video tutorial. The Gelatos® allow the wood's grain to show through while still accenting and defining the details in the wood.

Country Style Vision Board by Penny

Hello friends....Penny here today as a Guest Designer with some inspiration using the new  Faber-Castell® Design Memory Craft® Vision Board Kit. When this kit first arrived, I was like a kid in a candy store. So many fun elements in the kit, I just didn't know where to start. Being a country girl at heart, and knowing that pallet boards are popular right now...I started with that.

Let me show you how fun this is to put together:

1.  Start by making the Linen covered foam board according to Design Memory Craft directions in the included Design Guide.

Then start having some fun...

2.  For my Vision Board I used four yards of lace that I adhered double sided tape to, then ruffled it by hand about every inch. 

 

3.  Again using double sided tape, I attached the ruffle to the back of the Vision Board.

 

4.  Pallet boards were adhered together and cut to 17 x 14 inches. I then mixed  Coconut Gelatos® with water and flicked it across the boards. I also used a Stipple Brush to add a bit of my mixture to the edges of the wooden boards.

 

5.  There are so many fun elements in this Vision Board Kit, that I am sure you will have a hard time selecting some to play with. I used a few that I could color with the provided markers in the kit.  

 

6.  I adhered some of the elements like this pattern paper with re-positionable glue. Most of the cardstock paper pieces, I adhered to the board with the provided straight pins.

 

 7.  This is where you can have a lot of fun changing your board daily, weekly or monthly as desired. I want to go skiing in January, so that is what my board is about. There are so many ideas to use for your own Vision Board.....wedding, special anniversary, vacation, baby, remodeling....How would you design your Vision Board?

 

 The picture of my Vision Board at the top has flowers in the mason jar...but I also like the idea of having the markers & pins handy when I want to add something new to my board. Just giving you options here!!!  :)

We asked Jen to share a few design team stories! "Memories by Jen Matott"

I have so many amazing memories from the five years that I've been on this design team.  I was one of the original crew that started when the Design Memory Craft brand started.  

I was sent a pack of Gelatos colors in blue, Art Grip Aquarelle pencils and some PITT Artist pens to try out and create something with.  It was amazing!  Coming up with brand new ways to use these fabulous products was a thrill!  I fell in love with Gelatos and the entire Design Memory Craft line!  I had used Faber-Castell pencils and markers since I was a kid but these were so full of possibilities!  My banner was the first art piece in the ads.  It was so exciting!  I have a lot of favorite projects from my time on this team but I'll share a few of my favorites and a few memories along the way!

This booklet will always hold a special place in my heart.  It was the first kit project that I made and I created the project pages for the entire kit!  It went on to be one of the best selling kits.  I loved coming up with different ways to use the Gelatos on each page!  I still get a thrill when I see it on the packaging in the store!  Which leads to the next kit: Mixed Media with Gelatos.  I love this page from that artwork!  It was another amazing adventure to create art for this kit!

One of my favorite memories was getting to go to CHA in Las Vegas and Anaheim, CA!  What fun that was!  Lots of demoing and meeting people that I only knew from online.  It was a blast hanging out with the other designers and people behind the scenes at Faber-Castell Design Memory Craft! 

Every demo opportunity that I've had along the way has been amazing but especially with Marco's Paper!  Thanks for all those that stopped by and listened to me go on and on about these products and what they can do!

Also, the trip to Cleveland, OH to meet with the rest of the design team and staff at Faber-Castell headquarters!  It was a dream come true.  Fun to explore the entire building, hang out with everyone and brainstorm the future!  I loved every moment of it!  

There are so many good memories from working with these people and products.  I cannot say enough how lucky I was, how honored that they valued my artwork and ideas and that I got to work with such cool products!  I will be forever grateful for the long stretch that I got to work with this company!  But like all good things, it's time to move on and let some new artists have those same experiences.  I am sad to leave the team at this time but I have a lot going on at home with two very busy boys, my running/ training schedule and my own artwork.  I am an elementary school art teacher too so it is time to refocus my creative and personal goals.  I will continue to work with the Design Memory Craft products in my art and hope that I can still create work to show off these products.  Thank you for the amazing opportunity to inspire and share my love of art!
