Red Ruby Slippers

 

Hi Everyone, Mou Saha here today from Color Happy Creations!

School's back in session and conversations have already started about the first school dance. There's also tons of discussion and texting going on about Halloween plans and costumes. With any such occasion comes shopping and we all know how much girls love shopping for shoes! During every such shopping expedition, we come across pretty shoes that we can't even walk in, let alone dance in them but we always share a few good laughs over our inabilities. This time we saw a tiny little pair of red shoes that could be part of a Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz costume. While we didn't buy that pair, I decided to create my own cute version of it using my crafting supplies. Let me show you how I created my pair of red ruby slippers.

For the red ruby slippers, I chose Faber-Castell Design Memory Craft Gelatos® Iced Currant. The deep rich red hue of the pigment along with its metallic sheen was just perfect for this project.

To cut  my slippers,  I used a die but if you search the internet, you can easily find a slipper template that would work just as well. Here's one I found.

Here are my die-cut slipper parts colored with Gelatos® Iced Currant.

And the remaining pieces colored with Gelatos® Caramel.

 

 

Whether you are using the die cuts or cutting your pieces following a template, fold along the crease lines. Assemble the toes and backs on the small sole using Faber-Castell Design Memory Craft Gel Medium.

Assemble the heels and attach them to the bigger sole. These will be the bases of the slippers. Attach the top sole to the bottom sole with Gel Medium. You can refer to this assembly instruction pdf too.

Once the slippers are assembled, add another coat or two of Gelatos® Iced Currant and blend with Faber-Castell Design Memory Craft Glaze for a glossy finish. Let dry thoroughly.

Add pretty touches to your ruby slippers with doodling using the Magenta Faber-Castell Design Memory Craft PITT Artist Pen from Writing Set: RED/YELLOW.

Die-cut or punch out a couple of bows or tie them out of ribbon. Color with Faber-Castell Design Memory Craft Texture Luxe™ Gold. When dry, attach to the slippers to finish.

Be Awesome Altered Tin and Album

Welcome back to another colorful Gelatos® post! This is Rachel Kleinman and I'm sharing a new-to-me project with my favorite Gelatos® color: GUAVA! Last post I shared that Snowcone Gelatos® was the first color I ever owned; but Guava Gelatos® was my first favorite! The name definitely had something to do with it, I mean, Guava Juice is delicious :)

 

 

I started with a plain metal tin that included a little accordion style album inside. You can find these at many arts and crafts stores, or just make your own with an old mint tin. I covered everything with Gesso before adding my Gelatos®, Aquarelle® Pencils, and Whipped Spackle.

 

 

Since Guava Gelatos® is naturally a light color, I used my Aquarelle® Pencils to highlight and outline. You can see I've added a lot of orange to my album, and that's because I always find myself using Guava alongside the Mango Gelatos®. They just work together! You'll see in a lot of my pieces that where there's pink... there is orange right along side it!

 

 

There are a lot of new techniques I share in my how-to video for new ways to use your Guava Gelatos®. This includes misting, melting, and stenciling! 

 

 

This little album and tin is also filled to the brim with Mixed Media Stencils! I really love the addition of stencils to the Design Memory Craft line, it just makes designing so easy!

An Altered Paint Brush Holder by Mou Saha

Hello fellow Design Memory Craft fans, Mou here from Color Happy Creations with today's tutorial! It's all about altering a plain wooden brush holder with various Faber-Castell Design Memory Craft Textural Accents mediums. So, let's get started!

Here's a 'before' look at my brush holder. You can find similar ones at Michaels or another craft store. You can even upcycle cans from your recycle bin.

Here begins the fun! Cut off a little bit of Faber-Castell Design Memory Craft Gelatos® Cotton Candy with a palette knife onto a dish. Smash down the solid Gelatos® color with the palette knife.

Add Faber-Castell Design Memory Craft Textural Accent Whipped Spackle and mix the color in. Add more Gelatos® color for a darker shade. I used very little for I just wanted a hint of patina.  I left some spots of color from the mixing for effect, if you want even color you can add a couple drops of water to the Gelatos to completely dissolve color into the texture.

Wrap your favorite Mixed Media Stencil from the 102 Stencil Collection around your can/cylinder. Hold or tape in place.

Apply the colored Whipped Spackle mix you created earlier through the stencil with a palette knife. Remove the stencil. Use a heat tool to dry. If you didn't cover the whole cylinder in the first go, just match up the stencil and continue. 

TIP: When you use the heat tool, you'll notice that the Whipped Spackle tends to bubble up. This actually adds a lot of texture, especially on a project like this one.

Start rubbing in some Faber-Castell Design Memory Craft Texture Luxe™ Gold and Texture Luxe™ Copper, diluted with water using your fingers or a paint brush.

WARNING: Do NOT add water directly into the Texture Luxe™ tubs or any other medium for that matter as that will make them mold over time depending on where you live. Just scoop some medium out and dilute.

Rub some Faber-Castell Design Memory Craft Gesso on the textured surface.

Also, sparingly rub some Faber-Castell Design Memory Craft Chalk Board Paint to bring out the texture even more. And your altered brush holder is ready.

Home Décor with Gelatos

Hello Loves.  So glad to be here with you as part of the Faber-Castell Design Memory Craft Team.  Very grateful for this opportunity to create and share with you.  

It’s summer and many of us are all gearing up for a fun and festive 4th of July.  One of my favorite things for the holidays and seasons is to create something fun to hang on our door.  I love seeing what my neighbors do and have to join the fun with my own little handmade creation.  This time I decided on our last name initial.  How cool is that!  It’s quick and easy.  Here’s how you too can make your own!

Gather your supplies

Cover letter with Gesso.  

Use washi tape to create section lines, to allow for painting straight lines.

Use Gelatos® Boysenberry to cover top right, activate with water, spread using finger or paint brush.  I used my finger. Add Gelatos® Double Scoop®  Red Cherry to create red strips and use Gelatos® Iced Coffee to smudge in various spots to create an aged look. 

Punch out stars and cover with Glass Bead Glitter Gel.  Allow to dry and then adhere using Gel Medium.  Set aside to dry. 

Use Gelatos® Boysenberry and Gelatos® Double Scoop®  Red Cherry to color string.  Color on and rub in with fingers. This step is messy, have baby wipes handy for cleaning hands. 

Use Mixed Media Stencils, Scandinavian to create bird and color using Gelatos® Boysenberry, Metallic Grape and Snow cone.  Cut out bird.  Outline using a Black Faber-Castell Pitt Artist Pen, or here I used the Polychromos black pencil.

 

Wrap string around top right and tie bow. 

Use Gel Medium to adhere bird bottom left.

 

Use Mixed Media Stencils, Scandinavian to add flower by spreading  Texture Luxe™  in Gold over stencil to create sparkle and dimension.  Adhere string from bird beak to flower using Gel Medium. 

Finish off by adding dots using Texture Gems™ in gold. 

Protect by covering with Glaze or Gel Medium.

Guten Tag (Hello) from Jamie Dougherty

Hello everyone! Jamie Dougherty here and I am beyond excited to be joining the Faber-Castell Design Memory Craft team. I am honored to be a Featured Designer and wanted to kick off this new adventure with a little home decor piece to say Guten Tag or Hello ;) 

This little home decor piece was created on a 5x7" wood panel. Those of you who know me, know how much I love working with wood so I wanted to share how beautifully my favorite surface works with one of my favorite Design Memory Craft® mediums. The rich and colorful Gelatos®

 

 

As you can see in the video tutorial. The Gelatos® allow the wood's grain to show through while still accenting and defining the details in the wood.

Country Style Vision Board by Penny

Hello friends....Penny here today as a Guest Designer with some inspiration using the new  Faber-Castell® Design Memory Craft® Vision Board Kit. When this kit first arrived, I was like a kid in a candy store. So many fun elements in the kit, I just didn't know where to start. Being a country girl at heart, and knowing that pallet boards are popular right now...I started with that.

Let me show you how fun this is to put together:

1.  Start by making the Linen covered foam board according to Design Memory Craft directions in the included Design Guide.

Then start having some fun...

2.  For my Vision Board I used four yards of lace that I adhered double sided tape to, then ruffled it by hand about every inch. 

 

3.  Again using double sided tape, I attached the ruffle to the back of the Vision Board.

 

4.  Pallet boards were adhered together and cut to 17 x 14 inches. I then mixed  Coconut Gelatos® with water and flicked it across the boards. I also used a Stipple Brush to add a bit of my mixture to the edges of the wooden boards.

 

5.  There are so many fun elements in this Vision Board Kit, that I am sure you will have a hard time selecting some to play with. I used a few that I could color with the provided markers in the kit.  

 

6.  I adhered some of the elements like this pattern paper with re-positionable glue. Most of the cardstock paper pieces, I adhered to the board with the provided straight pins.

 

 7.  This is where you can have a lot of fun changing your board daily, weekly or monthly as desired. I want to go skiing in January, so that is what my board is about. There are so many ideas to use for your own Vision Board.....wedding, special anniversary, vacation, baby, remodeling....How would you design your Vision Board?

 

 The picture of my Vision Board at the top has flowers in the mason jar...but I also like the idea of having the markers & pins handy when I want to add something new to my board. Just giving you options here!!!  :)

Hi Artsy friends!  Jen here with another of my shoe creations!  I love altering shoes to wear with my basic outfits.  I always feel great wearing something that I created and something that is one of a kind. These shoes were purchased a local large store and were canvas.  Perfect for altering with Gelatos® colors!  I used Margarita Mix, Metallic Mint, Snow Cone, Lemon, Mango, and Passion Fruit for these shoes.
