Hi everyone! Carisa here with you today and I'm thrilled to be joining Faber Castell Design Memory Craft as part of their Fall/Winter Guest Designers. This is a big dream of mine and I'm still kinda pinching myself. I love using these products in my art journals and mixed media projects and it is my desire to inspire all of you over the next few months using some of my favorite products.
Today, it is all about the Mixed Media Set - Tropical available now at your Barnes and Noble stores! I think this would make the perfect gift for any of your crafty friends who may have mentioned wanting to try out mixed media or maybe YOU want to try mixed media but you just don't know how to get started. This kit is it! You get everything you need to truly get started on your own journey. I want to show you how I used all the products available in the kit in my art journal once I got it.
This is how the kit looks when you get it - isn't it just so pretty?! There is so much inspiration right there on the packaging but don't stare too long, go ahead and rip it open and let's get started! Each kit includes- 5 Gelatos® Colors, Pearl Texture Luxe™, 10 Mixed Media Stencils, Palette Knife, Stipple Brush, Dot Dabber, Drip Dropper, 2 Misting Bottles and an Illustrated Design Guide.
I have some additional photos below as well as descriptions of what I did to create my journal page but why don't you join me in my studio first with this video!
The first thing I did was coat my journal page with a light wash of Gesso. I always do this because it acts as a primer for whatever surface I am using and it gives me the best foundation for any techniques I might want to use along the way because I'll be honest…normally, I have NO idea what is going to come out on the page when I start. Then using Gel Medium, I added some tissue paper to my page to give me a background as a starting point. I love painting over text or pattern papers for the texture.
After that was dry, (I'll admit, I use a heat tool to speed up the drying process - I'm too impatient!) I picked out two Gelatos® Colors (Snow Cone, Margarita Mix) from the kit to start laying in my background. I just scribbled the colors on my page directly and sprayed with water to get it moving.
Once that was dry and I was happy with the amount of color on my page, I added some more texture using an empty tape holder - I love the double round circles it makes. I used my Stamper’s Big Brush Pen in Black 199 for this.
Then I added a little more color to the butterflies using Gelatos® Colors (Metallic Melon), I absolutely LOVE the subtle shimmer in the Metallics Collection. Using the supplies in the kit, I mixed my own color mist using Gelatos® Colors (Raspberry). This is pretty easy to do and I show you in my video. Instead of spraying though I ended up using the dropper to add splatters of color on my page. After that was dry, I added some of the gorgeous Pearl Texture Luxe™ that also comes in the kit using the banner stencil.
