Stenciling is such a wonderful technique with so many possibilities. It's Julia Stainton here today with a project that puts a spin on stenciling and has a great touch of glam.
There's so many different surfaces that you can stencil on. Most often I use paper but you can also stencil on fabric, canvas, wood and actually almost anything. I've been wanting to try stenciling on transparencies but not every medium is suited for adhering itself to the slick plastic surface. The new Texture Luxe™ from Faber-Castell Design Memory Craft® is a wonderful product and I couldn't wait to try it out and see how it worked on the transparencies.
I used the Texture Luxe™ Silver but there is also gold and pearl varieties available as well. Stenciling on transparencies is the same process you would use to apply any textural paste through a stencil and onto a surface. Simply lay the stencil over the surface and use a palette knife to spread the paste evenly over the stencil. Carefully remove the stencil once your paste is applied and allow to dry.
Once your Texture Luxe™ Silver layer is dry you can cut the transparency down to whatever size you need for your project. I love the beautiful texture and metallic shimmer. It's sort of a matte shine which is a nice counterpoint to the glossy surface of the clear transparency.
I love using the new Faber-Castell Design Memory Craft® Mixed Media Stencils 101 Collection. I used one of the stencils for the above transparency layer and now I use another one to create the background. Gelatos® are a really wonderful color medium to create with. I've created my own background by first covering a piece of white cardstock with some blues and greens and blended them together. To add more color and interest, I then used the circle grid stencil and applied Watermelon Gelatos® over it and then blended in the color.
The third technique in this project was to alter a pink resin cameo accent that I've had in my crafting stash forever. I love cameos but the brightness of the pink on this one was just a little too much for my taste. Brushing on a couple coats of Gesso was all it needed to make it into a beautiful white textured embellishment with a shabby chic look.
To put my card design all together, I layered the transparency and Gelatos® background onto a mat of white cardstock and then a pink card base. A couple tiny staples at the top and bottom of the transparency hold it on.
Clustering the embellishments together makes a nice focal point. I included a silver leaf to tie in with the beautiful silver stenciled transparency layer.
