Hey everybody! Joy here! I'm so excited to be sharing my first post as a new member of the Faber-Castell Design Memory Craft Guest Design Team! I had a great time creating this project. I made it for my daughter who is a Sophomore in college studying Meteorology. From the time she was 4 years old she's been in love with weather which grew into a specific love of severe weather. She's passionate about storms!
During the summer she took a photo of a storm in progress, shared it on Twitter and was then asked if Atlanta's 11 Alive news could share it. She was thrilled!
The first thing I did was cover my canvas with Gesso and let it dry. While that was drying, I created a paper stencil that said, "Weather Girl" using the Silhouette Cameo die cut machine. Next, I scribbled onto my dry gesso covered canvas with a Gelato® in the Squid Ink color.
Using a wet sponge brush, I painted over the Gelato® with water. That gave the canvas great coverage in grey, which was perfect for the cloudy background I needed to show through the words "Weather Girl".
After that layer was dry, I taped down the stencil using blue painter's tape. Then, I colored in the letters using a white Paper Crafter Crayon™ from the Neutral pack. What's great about using the Paper Crafter Crayons™ in this way is that they will act as a resist for the coming layers. The "Weather Girl" letters will show through as grey no matter how many other color layers I add with Gelatos® . Perfect for my rainy, foggy preferred look.
While the canvas was wet, I threw some salt onto it. That mottled the paint and aided in my dirty, rainy effect. Be sure to brush the salt off after it dries.
I mixed the Squid Ink, Snow Cone, Metallic Blueberry, Acqua Dolce and Metallic Mint Gelatos® with water in a bowl. Then I used the Drip Dropper from the Gelatos® Tool Set to suck up some of the paint. Then I threw it and dripped it onto the canvas to simulate rain. It was fun!
I cut apart some beautiful floral ribbon by May Arts and colored with a Squid Ink Gelato® directly onto it. I added some water with my spong brush and TA DA! A painted flower. It was AWESOME! I went back and added more Gelatos® in Blueberry Metallic until I got it just like I wanted it. I did the same thing to the other flower using a Banana Gelato®.
I paper punched out a few circles of cardstock and rubbed Squid Ink Gelato® and a little water into them. I cut the centers out of the ribbon flowers so they could hold a bottle cap and a clear glass decor gem. I glued the items to large paper clips and directly to the canvas using E-6000 adhesive.
I've been hanging onto this bottle cap for just the right occasion. It's great as the sun and I love that saying! Those cardstock arrows were heat embossed with clear UTEE.
I love the way this flower center looks! I think the Squid Ink Gelato® is my favorite.
If you look at the canvas you can see that I added Glaze in streaks to give a semi-gloss rain look. I also added it to the "Weather Girl" words which I detailed in Gel Medium. The best thing about this project, besides all the cool Faber-Castell products I got to use, is that my daughter loves this! YAY!
Thanks so much for checking out my first project on the Faber-Castell Design Memory Craft Guest Design Team!
