Coloring Fabric with Gelatos

For today’s projects I wanted to try a new technique with fabric. You can purchase white tone-on-tone fabric at most fabric or quilt stores. The reason I used the tone-on-tone instead of just any fabric is that the white printed design will resist the color and show through which I think is a really neat effect!

Here’s how I colored my fabric:

Taking strips of tone-on-tone fabric, apply color onto the fabric with the gelatos.

Using a wet paintbrush, blend the colors together. This will also make the printed fabric resist the color so that the white prints show through the gelatos.

Let them dry, wet fabric takes a little while to dry.

Use them in your projects! I stitched my fabric into a couple of string quilt blocks and made a mini art quilt. However you could also use them in scrapbook layouts, altered art, etc.

If you’re worried about the gelatos being waterproof, consider spraying the fabric/your projects with a water-resistant spray after you’re done.

Gelatos: Silver, Gold, Bubble Gum, Guava, Metallic Mint, Red Cherry, Butterscotch, Blue
