Whipped Spackle

For the Love of Art - Tag

2017-03-23 18.16.21

Happy spring everyone! This is Rachel sharing a quick mixed media tag featuring the stunning new Iridescent Gelatos®, including the Color of the Week: Supernova.

2017-03-23 16.46.17

First, I started with this tag I had leftover from my last project; it's covered in Whipped Spackle that was mixed with Blue Moon Iridescent Gelatos®. I also had some watercolor paper from when I experimented with the brand new Color Fizz products... aren't the colors beautiful?!

2017-03-23 16.45.43

I found some rubber heart shaped stamps that I "inked" up with Supernova Gelatos®, misted with water, and stamped onto my Color Fizz watercolor paper.

2017-03-23 16.59.57

Two of the hearts were fussy cut and added to my tag, along with some drywall tape that was also colored with Supernova and Mars Gelatos®. You'll also see an extra-thick coat of Glass Bead Glitter Gel through a mixed media stencil.

2017-03-23 17.20.37

Lastly I added some word stickers and the tag is complete!

An Art Journal Page with Gelatos Color Fig

FCDMC_January2017_Tutorial2_Fig_MouS

Hi everyone, Mou here today with an art journaling tutorial for you using the Gelatos® color Fig!

FCDMC_January2017_Tutorial2_Fig_Step1_MouS

Fig is this beautiful mix of purple and grey and works really well with both warm and cool colors. Without further ado, let me show you how I used Fig in my art journaling page.

Let's start with the supplies I used:

Faber-Castell Design Memory Craft Gelatos® colors: Fig, Banana, Blood Orange, Blueberry, Peach

Faber-Castell Design Memory Craft Textural Accents: Chalkboard Paint, Gel Medium, Gesso

Faber-Castell Design Memory CraftStamper's Big Brush Pen: Black

Others: Mixed media paper, found papers, thread, sewing machine, chipboard letters, paint brush, stamps, pencil

Now, let me walk you through the steps.

FCDMC_January2017_Tutorial2_Fig_Step2_MouS

Start by tearing found papers and attaching them to a mixed media paper base using Gel Medium. Once you have covered the whole surface, seal the papers with a top coat of gel medium. Let dry.

FCDMC_January2017_Tutorial2_Fig_Step3_MouS

Rub Fig Gelatos on the surface.

FCDMC_January2017_Tutorial2_Fig_Step4_MouS

Add more Gelatos colors and blend with Gesso.

FCDMC_January2017_Tutorial2_Fig_Step5_MouS

Attach chipboard letters to spell out your word of choice. I used 'Yes' based on a hashtag I saw on Instagram. Machine stitch all over the page and stamp around randomly for some added visual texture.

FCDMC_January2017_Tutorial2_Fig_Step6_MouS

Ink up alphabet stamps with Black Stamper's Big Brush pen to finish the message on your page.

FCDMC_January2017_Tutorial2_Fig_Step8_MouS

With Chalkboard Paint, brush on a focal point. I chose florals. Feel free to draw your own favorite.

FCDMC_January2017_Tutorial2_Fig_Step8_MouS

Make simple marks all around the focal point with pencil, Gesso, and Gelatos to finish.

I hope you enjoyed today's tutorial and be sure to share links to your takes with Fig Gelatos in the comments below.

Sparkly Iced Pear Frame

Pear Frame Half Watermarked

Hi Loves. Tiare here.  Sparkle and shine just make me smile.  I hope it makes you smile too, because I've got some shimmer and shine for you today.  The color of the week is, Gelatos® Iced Pear and boy, does it shine!

Grab your  Gelatos® and let's play.  Let's make this awesome frame together.

Pear Frame 1

Cover frame with Gesso and use a bit of  Whipped Spackle too, to create texture.  Dry and color frame using the Gelatos® Iced Pear.  Spread with a wet paint brush.

Pear Frame 2

Mix the Gelatos® Iced Pear with Glass Bead Glitter Gel to create this sparkly texture.

Pear Frame 3

Spread around frame.  I sure wish you could see the sparkle better in the picture.  It's lovely!

Pear Frame Complete Watermarked

Scribble around frame using Texture Gems™ Pearl in white, to add a bit of dazzle.  Finish it off by embellishing with paper flowers, some bling and hang a dragonfly charm from a piece of twine.

 Tada!

XOXO

2017-01-19 20.01.10

Hello and Happy Friday from me, Rachel! Roses and candy are starting to fill store shelves, which means it's time to prepare for Valentine's Day. For me, that means making cards, cards, and even more cards! So today, I'm sharing a heart-filled greeting card that features the subtle yet gorgeous Peach Gelatos®.

2017-01-19 18.11.17

I used a lot of my metal dies for this card, including this xoxo die that I cut with watercolor paper. I then colored three "xoxo" pieces with Gelatos® in Peach, Guava, and Strawberry (I was digging the fruits tonight!). I also painted a thin layer of Glass Bead Glitter Gel which you can see on the final card.

2017-01-19 19.23.57

For the base of my card, I mixed Whipped Spackle with Peach Gelatos® and spread it over a Mixed Media 101 stencil.

2017-01-19 19.25.31

Is there anything more satisfying than lifting a stencil?! It's so pretty! I also die cut a solid heart, which I colored with Strawberry Gelatos®. I used the heart as a backdrop for the layered 'xoxo' sentiment.

2017-01-19 20.01.20

The finishing touches include a strip of gold glitter washi tape and mini die cut hearts colored with Gold Champagne Gelatos®.

2017-01-19 20.01.10

Thanks so much for joining me today. I hope you've been inspired to start working on those Valentine cards!

Feminine and Industrial Stenciled Decorative Shelf

Hey friends!  Adrianne Surian here with you today to share a project that's a great way to showcase your artistic style and creativity while also being a piece of functional decor.  I am a HUGE fan of dual-purpose projects, and of giving an artistic makeover to outdated or thrifted items.

Decorative Shelf 1 WM

This inexpensive  shelf only holds a few supplies in my studio, but it filled a space that I was having trouble choosing art for because of its location.  Now, I have something pretty to help keep a few items at arm's reach all the time.

Round Shelf 3

This project mixes textures and techniques in a subtle way, which is exactly what Gelatos® are great for!  Today we will be using the color of the week, Metallic Icing, and a couple additional colors to watercolor, tint, stencil, and glaze.

Round Shelf 4

This round  shelf is 11" in diameter, so I covered about 2/3 of it with a plain piece of white paper, and left the rest raw wood to work on.  I tore the edge of the paper to give it a little rougher look (which is optional, of course), brushed the backside of the paper with a thin coat of Glaze, then adhered it to the front of the shelf.  I had to cut out the paper around the holes for the shelves, and also trim around the edge of the circle to remove all the excess.

Once the paper was in place, I spread a thick coat of Whipped Spackle onto the raw wood portion of the circle, allowed it to dry for a couple of minutes, and then pressed a wide piece of burlap onto the Whipped Spackle to create a rough texture.  (I peeled the burlap off gently afterward - I was only interested in the impression that it could make.)

Round Shelf 5

Next, I used Gelatos mixed with a small amount of warm water and a paintbrush in Elderberry and Silver Ice over parts of the papered side of the circle, giving it a light water colored background.

Round Shelf 7

Next, I mixed a small amount of Silver Ice Gelatos with Gel Medium, and using the brick stencil from the 201 Stencil Collection, I stenciled along the edges of a few bricks.  Then I mixed a larger amount of Gel Medium with the color of the week, Metallic Icing to fill the bricks in more fully.

Using both colors like this gives your brick background subtle dimension - the silver helps to define the edges in areas where the bricks are more white-on white, but it still allows the overall look of white bricks.

Round Shelf 8

Allow your background to dry completely, and then add stenciling!  I used the BE-you-TIFUL stencil from the 301 stencil collection along with Squid Ink Gelatos mixed with Whipped Spackle and Passion Fruit Gelatos with Glass Bead Glitter Gel, taking care to avoid where the shelves would be attached.

Then, I added a few small accents with my leftover Squid Ink and Passion Fruit mixtures, adding arrows from the 201 stencil collection at the top, and a few flowers at the bottom.

Round Shelf 9

Finally, allow everything to dry fully, and then you can add a bit of translucent shimmer to any areas you wish using a bit of Metallic Icing Gelatos and Glaze.  This is actually my personal favorite way to use the Metallic Icing color - when mixed with glaze, you can brush it over any area of your art to lighten colors, fill gaps or soften edges, or just plain add a shimmer to any area of your piece.

I brushed the tinted Glaze over the burlap-textured left side, and over areas of bricks and stenciling wherever I wanted to add some shimmer.

While I waited for the face to dry, I used Passion Fruit and Metallic Ice Gelatos on the shelves to help them to match.

Decorative Shelf 2

When the piece was dry, I attached the shelves (which will be a tight fit - if you're using this kit or a similar one, you may find you need the aid of a hammer for a secure fit) and also attached a hanger to the backside of the shelf for mounting.  (Tip: for a shelf like this with offset shelves, you may want to add a second hanger near the bottom of the shelf so that it doesn't tip if it's not weighted evenly.)

The end result is an industrial look with bricks and rough burlap that also boasts a feminine message - which is a perfect look for my studio!  It's great inspiration for both building and polishing new crafts.

Thanks for joining me today, and I hope you're inspired to try something new!

October Leaves - Art Journal Video

2016-10-16 14.24.38

Hello! Rachel here sharing an art journal page that honors the beautiful month of October! The Gelatos® Color of the Week is the gorgeous Cinnamon, such a perfect autumn shade.

2016-10-16 14.24.49

I combined the Cinnamon Gelatos® with Metallic Blueberry, Boysenberry, and Snow Cone Gelatos, I just love the true blue shades with pretty browns. The art journal includes tracings of oak leaves from my backyard that I painted with Boysenberry Gelatos and traced with the gorgeous Gold Texture Gems™. I also used Gesso through a Mixed Media 101 stencil, then painted highlights on each polka dot with Cinnamon Gelatos.

2016-10-15 15.54.06

I used my Black Stamper's Big Brush Pen to very loosely trace my leaves on parchment paper. Then I painted the 'leaves' with Gesso before adhering to the journal with Gel Medium.

The Not-So-Scary Halloween Owl

FCDMC_October2016_Tutorial1_CinnamonOwl_MouS

Hi everyone, Mou from Color Happy Creations here today with a tutorial to create a not-too-scary Halloween Owl!

Recently, I came across this fun Halloween quote on Pinterest:

"A Great Big Owl in a great big tree, On a night so dark, you could hardly see, Was watching the lights in the deep ravine, Where the witches danced on Halloween."

FCDMC_October2016_Tutorial1_CinnamonOwl_Step1_MouS

It inspired me to alter this chipboard owl I found in the children's craft section at Michaels using our Gelatos® color of the week, Cinnamon. Let me show you the steps.

FCDMC_October2016_Tutorial1_CinnamonOwl_Step2_MouS

Use Faber-Castell® Design Memory Craft® Gel Medium to attach the parts to the owl as shown.

FCDMC_October2016_Tutorial1_CinnamonOwl_Step3_MouS

Prime the slick surface of the owl with Faber-Castell Design Memory Craft Gesso to receive colors better.

FCDMC_October2016_Tutorial1_CinnamonOwl_Step4_MouS

Color the ears, wings and belly with Cinnamon Gelatos®. Blend colors with a slightly wet brush.

FCDMC_October2016_Tutorial1_CinnamonOwl_Step5_MouS

Color around the eyes and the feet with Caramel Gelatos®.

FCDMC_October2016_Tutorial1_CinnamonOwl_Step6_MouS

Color the body and below the ears black using Faber-Castell Design Memory Craft Chalkboard Paint.

FCDMC_October2016_Tutorial1_CinnamonOwl_Step7_MouS

Sketch some details on the owl with pencil. Color around the eyes with Gelatos® Iced Coffee.

FCDMC_October2016_Tutorial1_CinnamonOwl_Step8_MouS

Accentuate the details with a Faber-Castell Design Memory Craft  PITT® Artist pen.

FCDMC_October2016_Tutorial1_CinnamonOwl_Step9_MouS

Lay the leaf pattern stencil from the Faber-Castell Design Memory Craft 102 Stencil Collection on the owl's belly and apply Faber-Castell Design Memory Craft Whipped Spackle with a palette knife. Remove stencil immediately and let the medium dry on the owl.

Stitched Heart Necklace with Red Cherry Gelatos

Hey friends!  Adrianne Surian here with you today to share another fun-sized mixed media project.  You may have noticed that I have a passion for jewelry and wearable art. It's a great way to bring your pieces with you as a fantastic accessory and express yourself everywhere you go!

Stitched Heart Necklace Red Cherry 1.1

Today I'm using a rustic iron pendant base, and the Gelatos® color of the week, Red Cherry, alongside some of my favorite Design· Memory· Craft® products to create this stitched heart necklace.

Stitched Heart Necklace Red Cherry 5

You all know that mixed media extends beyond the page to a wide variety of materials, and this pendant uses Whipped Spackle to turn a jewelry-quality, lead-free iron pendant into a tiny canvas.

Stitched Heart Necklace Red Cherry 6

With this vibrant color of the week, a hopeful heart seemed like the perfect mixed media project!  Because the iron is naturally dark, I mixed Red Cherry Gelatos with Whipped Spackle to create an opaque red base. To start, simply cut off some of the Gelatos stick (I used about 1/4") with your palette knife, crush it, and mix it well with an acorn-sized dab of Whipped Spackle.

Use the palette knife to spread a generous layer of the Red Cherry Whipped Spackle over the top of the pendant - I went for a mostly-smooth, semi-even coat of Whipped Spackle (you can see it in the photo below).  I waited about 5 minutes and then used a small rubber stamp to add my initial to the pendant.  You could stamp an entire word into it if you wish (like love, hope, art, heart - whatever inspires you).  Clean any holes in the pendant that may have gotten Whipped Spackle (you can use a toothpick for this step), and then set the pendant aside and allow the Whipped Spackle to dry before continuing.

Stitched Heart Necklace Red Cherry 8

When the Whipped Spackle is dry, there will be some naturally textured areas around the edges of the pendant, near the holes, and near the stamped area.  I brushed a light coat of Silver Texture Luxe™ over a few areas to add shine and to break up the solid red.

Stitched Heart Necklace Red Cherry 9

I continued to add complementary colors in very small areas by applying Gelatos directly to the pendant.  I used a hint of Iced Currant and Mango ®®with the Cherry Red.

Stitched Heart Necklace Red Cherry 10

Finally - jewelry and wearable art should be sealed!  Gelatos are water-based and easy to blend, which is a fantastic quality when you're at your art table!  But to be sure your favorite sweater or blouse doesn't end up with a little delicious color where it doesn't belong, add a generous coat of glaze over the whole piece to seal the Gelatos colors.

Be sure to once again clear any holes of remaining glaze, and set the piece aside to dry fully before continuing.

Stitched Heart Necklace Red Cherry 11

When your pendant base is dry, add wire "stitching" through the center holes.  Attach a pair of 10mm or larger jump rings to the top of the pendant, and string a necklace chain through the rings.  I prefer a 20" chain to rest at a low neckline, but you can adjust your chain length shorter or even longer to suit your personal style!

Stitched Heart Necklace Red Cherry 4.2

The final piece is a tiny but bold statement necklace that is sure to be noticed - especially when paired with a solid top.  Your art will get plenty of attention around your neck, which is always a great way to introduce yourself as an artist at events or parties!   Thanks for joining me to check out today's mixed media jewelry and I'll see you all again soon!
