Hey friends! Adrianne Surian here with you today to share a home decor makeover using the new Gelatos® Iridescents, featuring the color of the week: Stardust!
I have a lamp at my desk that has needed an update for a while now. It was plain wood when I bought it, and when chevron and distressing were all the rage, I painted it. I loved it for a while, but now my style is much brighter and bolder - especially in my work space! So it was time for a makeover.
I used some Essential Textural Accents, the "dream big" stencil from the 303 Mixed Media Stencil Collection, and some brand new Design· Memory· Craft® products - Ice Layers Stencils, and Gelatos Iridescents with shimmery hues.
To begin, I mixed Gesso with a small amount of Gelatos® in the color Galaxy. If un-tinted, Gesso goes on white. I wanted a hint of color for my background, and Gesso provided great coverage over the old paint job. (I taped off the areas of the lamp I wanted to protect with painter's tape as well - because I know myself, and I can get a little messy!)
Once my Gesso was dry, I cut apart the Arrow Ice Layers Stencils, which are heavy-duty self adhesive stencils. I used them in different directions with the three colors in this project: Stardust, Galaxy, and Blue Moon. Each color was mixed with a small amount of Gel Medium, and the adhesive backside made it easy to get nice clean edges!
Next, I stenciled "dream big" onto the front panel of the lamp using Galaxy and Stardust, mixed with Gel Medium. Allow each layer to dry before moving on to the next, and don't be nervous to try overlapping shapes and words!
When I was happy with my stenciling, I mixed a bit of Glaze with Stardust Gelatos, and brushed a light coat in random areas on each side of the lamp. This helps to highlight the pink tones without being too much pink!
Finally, I added a small arrow accent to the corner of the lampshade as well, bringing a finishing touch of Stardust Gelatos (mixed with Gel Medium) to tie the design together. If you haven't tried using Gelatos mixed with Gel Medium on fabric surfaces yet, it's easy to do! It's no different than using textural accents on paper and other flat surfaces.
The finished piece has its home right next to me as I type this, and the inspirational message and bright colors really add cheer to my work space. The "dream big" message is also great for kids' bedrooms (or kids at heart)!
