Intro to ICE LAYERS Video + Art Journal
An Art Journal Page with Gelatos® Color IRIDESCENTS Comet

Painted Wooden Spoon Set

Hey friends! Adrianne Surian here with you today to share a fun makeover for plain wooden utensils.  Gelatos® can turn just about any item into a work of art, and this week we are featuring Iridescent Comet as the color of the week!  The bright green is a cheerful color for your spring and summer art projects, and today I'm showing you how to add a bit of art to your kitchen, or make a gift for housewarmings, hostesses, Mother's Day, and more!

When adding art mediums to food utensils, it's important to note that anything painted should be kept to handles and outer surfaces only, as food safety standards are quite strict.  Seal your art with several coats of glaze to help it last, and always hand-wash painted pieces.

Today I'm using green and blue hues from the Gelatos Iridescents collection, and using decoupage, gel tinting and stencil techniques.

Begin by first cutting a small piece of office paper to wrap around the top of the handle.  The exact dimensions will vary by your spoon or spatula length, but limit the embellishment to the top 1/4 of the handle.  Use Glaze to decoupage the paper onto the wood handle, giving you a bright white background to start with.  (Note: you can also use a few thin coats of Gesso on wood and bamboo for the same effect, but I find that the combination of paper and Glaze dries faster, and helps to better preserve my supplies.)

Allow the Glaze to dry, then cut a small amount of Comet Gelatos off the the sick with a palette knife.  Add a bit of Gel Medium, and mix the color in thoroughly to tint it. Spread the tinted Gel Medium onto the decoupaged area however you like; I added a thin coat in some areas, and a thicker coat in others.

Allow that to dry, and apply Ice Layers stencils where you like to add bubbles!  I used a combination of blue and blue-green iridescent colors: Blue Moon, Satellite, and Nebula, mixed with Gel Medium.

The Ice Layers stencils are self adhesive, so you want to be sure your background layer is completely dry before applying them, but once you do, you can get gorgeous, thick coats of Gel designs with sharp, clean edges.  These thick stencils will require extra time to dry before you continue - I typically leave them overnight!  But a few hours is sufficient.  Finally, finish off the set with a couple coats of Glaze to seal your design well and to help prevent it from chipping away when used.

I hope you enjoyed today's project, and that you're inspired to give something in your home a makeover with Gelatos!  Leave a comment if you do!
