Highlight Something Personal! Poetic Jewelry Box

Hey friends! Adrianne Surian here with you today, and I'm excited to share a project using the new Gelatos® Colors  Highlighters  They are a perfect solution to highlight  all of your bright ideas.  I'm using mine on this poetic jewelry box combining the Classic Robert Frost poem "The Road Not Taken" and a sassy spring selfie.

The highlighter Gelatos  Colors are awesome for journaling and for planner pages, but don't forget that pages aren't limited only to books when it comes to mixed media!  Paper can be applied to so many surfaces to give you a truly personal and unique piece.

I picked up this little chest of drawers on a whim while shopping, and I knew it was a perfect item to that I could personalize.  After all, my ego isn't so big that I could put my face on just anything!  But this little chest of drawers tucked away in my bedroom is a great way to remind myself that self-confidence is always in style.

The techniques used on this project  are simply  decoupage and stenciling, in addition to a little bit of minor hardware installation (for the knobs).  I trimmed my paper to match the size of the  shelves and the face of the three drawers, and I used Glaze to decoupage the image and text onto the front surface.  You don't have to print an image here!  You can use plain white paper, wrapping paper, napkins, or anything you like!  When you're decoupaging, it is easier to adhere thinner papers rather than card stock or photo paper, so I wouldn't try anything too heavy.

To keep the front face all as one image, I closed the drawers to begin working . I used the Ice Layers floral stencil  in addition to the mixed media stencils that are included in the Gelatos Highlighter set.  I also added in the brick and herringbone mixed media stencils from the 101 stencil collection to give the piece a little variety.

You may need to sand the edges of your drawers or the openings if you have any papers that don't line up exactly.  Even if not, it's likely you'll want to cover the bare wood edges.  I used a small amount of black acrylic paint along the bottom base, and then around each of the edges to give it a more industrial look.  Depending what look you're going for, you may want something softer and less bold.  But that's the great thing about art - you can make it your own!  Follow your own instinct to create something meaningful to you.

Finally, I used a drill to drill a small hole in each of the drawers.  You can use a Dremel tool or any power drill for this.  The hole only needs to be as large as the screw on the knobs you select.  Installing the knobs puts the final touch on your jewelry box!

As a child of the 80's, I cannot love this project enough, and the poem inspires me every day.  It's a piece of art that adds inspiration to my morning routine! The size is perfect for jewelry pieces, lip balm, hair ties, nail polish - all those small items that need organization.  If you're inspired by this project, leave a comment!  I'd love to know what kind of piece you'd like to turn into a work of art!
