Blog Hop with Hazel & Ruby - Day 1 with Jen

This week we'll be pairing with the fabulous Hazel and Ruby! Each day this week, we’ll post a new project on our blogs. Make sure you hop to both blogs and the Facebook page for more chances to win our giveaways!

I'm the first one to share my project!  I was so excited to get my box of goodies! The Hazel & Ruby Broadside Alpha Stencil-Masks are so much fun!  They are reuseable and are easy to use.  I created this sign for my classroom.  I will be framing it and using it for my gallery wall.  I have a wall that I hang kid's creations that they gift me with from home!  They love seeing their work on the wall and I keep them all in a binder when it's time to switch it up with new work.

Here's how I made this fun creation:

MakeArtJenMatott01I started by using Faber-Castell Design Memory Craft Gelatos® colors in Banana, Pistachio, Mango, Tangerine, Lemon, and Cherry.  I just randomly applied them to a piece of watercolor paper.  I added some water with a brush to blend a bit. I let that dry and added the letter masks to spell out "Make Art".  I left room at the end of Art for a Pic Pocket.  MakeArtJenMatott03

I covered the entire page with Faber-Castell Design Memory Craft Textural Accents Gesso.  I went right over the masks and a square of paper that I used as a mask for the Pic Pocket.  Since it is see-through, I wanted to leave it with the color underneath.   I kept the Gesso to one layer so the colors are very muted but still somewhat visable.

MakeArtJenMatott05I used a palette knife to carefully remove the masks and used baby wipes (I love those things!) to clean the dried Gesso off of the masks before I returned them to the packaging sheet for storage! They were super easy to clean and restick!

MakeArtJenMatott07Next up I used some more Faber-Castell Design Memory Craft Gelatos® colors from the Steampunk set to drip down the page and splatter with the stipple brush from our Gelatos®Tool Set.

MakeArtJenMatott10Once that dried, I brushed on some Textural Accents Gel Medium around the page and sprinkled the Sequins( I got the Green with Envy set) on those areas.  When the Gel Medium dries, it is mostly matte finish and the sequins stay stuck!

MakeArtJenMatott12Finally, I added some outlining with a PITT Artist Pen in black. I will probably put a little photo or inspirational quote in the Pic Pocket and change it out each month.

Thanks for visiting and make sure you leave a comment here and on the Hazel and Ruby blog for a chance to win $50 in product from Faber-Castell Design Memory Craft and Hazel and Ruby! For another chance to win, leave a comment on our Facebook page and the Hazel and Ruby Facebook page. International participants are welcome.

Fabulous work! Love the techniques and it would look perfect in my craft room!

Love the colors on this. Who wouldn't be inspired to "make art" with this poster on the wall.

I *love* your artwork, Jen!! Hazel & Ruby masks work so well with DMC products!

Love making canvases so these masks look like a must-have! Great tip, too, on using gel medium to "glue" the sequins in place - much faster than adhering them individually!

Tasha F

Very cool! I didn't know you could clean the dried gesso off with a baby wipe.

These masks are awesome!!! Project is great...kids would love to create these with their names for their rooms!

Nancy Carroll

What a lovely and inspiring canvas! I MUST get myself the broadside alphabet stencil mask--I need this SO badly and have no car to run out and buy them so I think now that I've seen your project here, I'll order them today! It's so cool that your students will see this hanging daily and be inspired to create freely--I bet they let go of some self conscience feelings upon entering your classroom and feel a sense of freedom. I just feel like you are probably a really great teacher :) TFS this beautiful work of art! I love it

Linda Tupper
